Case Study 1 - Conservation Property

Primary Requirement - Heating & Humidity Control

This large Georgian property, with high ceilings and single glazed sash windows was looking for a back up to their main gas central heating, so they could heat rooms on an individual basis, as required.

Heating was the primary consideration, but cooling was a benefit for the summer months.

The customer didn't want to make the shift to a Air to Water Heat Pump because of the disruption involved in replacing all pipework and radiators, and also because of the age and style of the building it was impractical to insulate the property to a high enough level to make it effective at the systems low output temperature.

A full Split A/C System was also impractical, as the outdoor condenser unit and interior and exterior trunking would not compliment the elegance if the Georgian building.

A further issue saw high levels of condensation in the winter months on the properties traditional single glazed sash windows.

The Solution

The customer opted for a slightly higher rated Powrmatic Vison 3.6Kw unit, for an average sized room, to allow for the high ceilings in the property.

Installation took 4 hours, as walls were thick and made of a tough Ashlar stone.

Upon completion there was no affect on the original features of the room or exterior, with the unit being vented in a less prominent position on the rear of the building.

The customer has found the unit he can heat this more heavily used room throughout the day to a comfortable level at the same unit cost as their gas central heating, but without the added expense of heating the whole building continually.

The customer has also found, because of the continual input of dry, warm air, the condensation levels on the window panes have dramatically decreased.

Case Study 2 - New Build - Loft Apartment

Primary Requirement - Cooling & Heating at a Sensible Price

This new, one bedroom loft apartment is highly insulated to modern standards, and all ready used an all electric heating system.

The elderly resident was finding it much too warm in summer because of the high level of insulation.

And although the heating was currently  supplied using electric infrared heating panels, which looked elegant and proved to be reliable and maintenance free, the cost per kW was high as they were only 100% efficient.

The customer liked the simplicity and reliability of electric heating but also required a solution for the extreme heat of summer.

With outdoor space limited, and the building constructed from a elegant stone facade a Split A/C System would have been impractical and also overkill, for what is a small property.

The Solution

We recommended two Powrmatic Vision Compact units. One for the bedroom, and one for the open plan Kitchen/Lounge.

The customer would keep using a small infra-red towel heater that was adequate to heat the bathroom

Installation was a full day for the two units.

Both units were installed at high level to compliment the vaulted ceilings to the property.

The customer kept the existing infra-red units in place as they were a nice feature, and also to give a added kick to heating on the very coldest of days.

The customer is delighted with how the new system works and is particularly pleased that the bedroom can be kept at a cooler level than the rest of the apartment for night time

The customer has also found that the general air quality is much improved, in what is a highly draft-proofed building, with the A/C units inputting fresh-air into the apartment.

Case Study 3 - Holiday Cottage

Primary Requirement - Cooling

This 5 Star reviewed holiday cottage already had a modern and efficient heating and hot water system via a recently installed quality gas combi--boiler. This served the guests heating needs in a cost effective manner.

However the owners were finding, over the last few years, more and more people were enquiring prior to booking, as the whether the property had Air-Conditioning. They were also concerned, that during the ever more frequent UK heatwave periods, more guests were making comments on their feedback forms about being uncomfortably warm.

So they were looking for a method of cooling the property. Their priorities were for the system to be easy to use for first time guests, the ability to remotely control the units, to be cost effective to run, and to be elegant and discreet so as to compliment the existing ambiance of the property. Another requirement would be to minimise downtime for installation and minimal servicing, as the property is  regularly booked.

A Split A/C System was disregarded, as outdoor space was limited, the two rooms to be served were at different ends of the property, the required trunking routes would have had a negative effect on the exterior of the building.

Temporary solutions such as Portable A/C Units and Electric Fans were not considered to be in keeping with the cottages customer base, and these solutions also didn't allow them to advertise the property has having Air Conditioning, as more guests are requesting.

The Solution

The layout of the property is slightly unusual as the bathroom and kitchen are on the ground floor, with lounge being on the first floor, centrally located,  and both bedrooms off the lounge at different ends.

The ground floor remained relatively cool as it was built into the ground on two sides. So it was only the first floor that required cooling.

As the lounge was central we recommended a unit to be placed in each bedroom. This would keep each bedroom cool which was the priority, but the flow through of cool air would also cool the lounge.

The Vision Compact would adequately serve the smaller bedroom, whilst the Vision 3.1kW  would be used in the master bedroom. because of the available wall space.

Installation was a full day for the two units.

The customer has reported the system has worked well in the recent heatwaves, with glowing reviews from guests.

They have also found that on the few occasions the property is empty,  putting the system on low, remotely via the app.prevented the air becoming stale and humid.

The owners have also been able to increase their nightly rate as they can now advertise Air Conditioning with the property.
